John Cali
We were recently asked this question:
We notice that Chief Joseph does not advocate delving into the past. What is Chief Joseph's view on healing modalities that involve delving into the past, such as past-life regression therapy and accessing the Akashic records, then?
Chief Joseph
It is true -- we do not advocate delving into the past, however you define that “past.”
While we do not think there is anything “wrong” with doing past-life regressions, we do not think you will find much “therapy” there. If you’re simply curious about your past lives, then dive into as many of them as you like. If you want to have a slightly clearer understanding of where you are in your current lifetime, dive into your past lives.
But if you want to find healing for what you think ails you in your current lifetime, you ain’t gonna find it in the past! Either the past of your so-called past lives or your Akashic records.
We know many disagree with us on this. After all, much of the psychotherapy your society practices today is based on the past. It doesn’t matter what past you are talking about here -- the life you lived a thousand years ago, the Akashic records of that life, or the life you lived ten years ago. Or ten minutes ago.
All that’s needed for you to heal your present life is to intend it. You can do that only in the present moment.
Friends, this is our point here today:
You are not shackled by your past. You are not doomed to repeat your past. You do not need to understand your past. You do not need to know how or why you are here now. Just be here now!
All your power is in this present moment -- all of it!
All you ever need to do is to decide and intend to be healed. The power of your intention is incredible.
But that power is diluted and diminished if you immerse yourselves in past trauma and pain. That serves no productive purpose whatsoever. As one of your wise writers and teachers once said, “Psychoanalysis is skin-diving into a bathtub of old bones and broken records.”
We applaud your passionate desire to heal yourselves. But you cannot do it by remembering your painful past, and thereby creating anew the very vibration of the wounding you experienced in the past. That will serve only to wound you again in the present.
Again, we repeat ourselves:
All that’s needed for you to heal your present life is to intend it. You can do that only in the present moment.
Only in the present moment will you find your power. And your healing.

John Cali Since 1992, John Cali has been communicating with a non-physical entity called Joseph. In one of his many physical lifetimes, this spirit was incarnated as the legendary Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe in what is now the state of Oregon in the northwestern USA. These messages are a blend of information from Joseph, other spirits in the "Joseph group," and John. Joseph and John are available for private readings. Details here: |

Interesting concept, though
Interesting concept, though its presentation appears incomplete and replete with pat answers. This message seems to reflect a literal and incomplete understanding of looking at what the so-called 'past' is all about. It also appears to imply that we can be like ostriches sticking our heads in the ground, or wear rose colored glasses in regards to this 'past', in other words, a discounting and perhaps even flippant statement.
From 30 years of experience in this field and also seeing a few similar comments, I'd have to say the view is rather narrow. The past can only be painful if you view it that way in the present. It is true that the power is in the present, so from a place of power in the present, much healing can be done from any area of our 'past'.
As well, why is it that the past must always be filled with 'pain'? Why not also look at the positives and creative adventures we have created in that version of the present?
We all create our experiences, some joyous and even traumatic, but again from the present. There is a great saying: "The Present is the interpreter of the past and the weaver of the Future", which comes from the Vedas, a body of knowledge that is many thousands of years old.
So, if someone doesn't truly understand how we create our moments and may feel lost in their own feelings/emotions, its natural that they'd discount the 'past' as irrelevant, while it can actually be a well of rich knowledge. After all, even in simple terms.... do we learn from our future, or do we learn from the experiences we create yesterday and that we create last year and so on, or do we learn from the experiences we create next year?
The human mind does make use of linear time from the conscious perspective, even though the subconscious mind is ever in the present. That is why the conscious mind is also often called the 'thinker' and the subscious called the 'maker': and the reality we create becomes the measure of our creation abilities, physical reality confirms what we create.
Thus, how we deal with the so-called past has much more relevance than fearing it and discounting it out of ignorance.
I mean, we can take the delivery quite literally and go further: stop all history, eliminate all books all education, all mention, even make it illegal to talk about what happened 10 minutes ago, because its an irrelevant past! Try to tell that to the bank that needs you to pay your mortgage or your credit card company: "Dear Bank or Credit Card, the past, including my mortgage and/or my credit debt is irrelevant so I do not have to pay it since its in the past", and see how far the past will catch up! :-)
Enjoy the present, even in your past!
open-minded ....
It seems one opinion can be correct, yet the other is narrow-minded, true open-minded is about understanding all, what i can say (and it doesn't matter the years experiences I have, as I may well have hundreds of years, in total...) is that what has happened is for learning only, we form our future on the now, if we spend too much time in our past, we often forget the now, which in turn has an effect on our future ... there is a place in our present society for past healers but I feel thats because we easily blame, so past experiences are heavily coated in blame and guilty ... when we stop the blame, we stop the guilt, maybe then we don't need past healers .... just maybe!
