Astrology Column: The Sun and Your Ascendant
For most of us when someone mentions Astrology to you, your first thought is perhaps the daily horoscopes you read in the paper and the knowledge you have of your own birth sign. What people are not so much aware of is that your Astrology is the blue print of your life, it is the hand book you lost on the way down!
How this Astrology works is through the interpretation of your Natal Chart. Your Natal Chart is a map of the heavens at the time of your birth, therefore no two Charts will be alike as this information is based on the TIME, DATE and PLACE of your birth, and as the planets move in relationship to each other every 4 minutes, it is extremely rare for any two Charts to be the same.
For anyone, and especially those on the spiritual path, your Natal Chart is an imperative guide and wealth of information to help you along your journey. I believe that when you truly know and accept yourself for the person that you are, then there is nothing you cannot achieve in your lifetime. Your Natal Chart gives you the insight into what makes you tick and react the way that you do to certain situations and people, and through this insight you can learn to let go of the Self and the ego attachment we have to our emotions. Your Natal Chart can also identify periods in your life when you are concentrating on particular lessons, and you can see how at these times there is always plenty of positive energy to use to learn from, just as there is negative energy there to refuse to learn from.
Through a series of articles I am going to introduce you to the different planets and the energies that surround them and how they affect you and your growth on the earth plane.
The Sun and your Ascendant are very much the backbone of who you are and how you are here to learn in this lifetime.
The Sun and Your Ascendant
The astrological sign that you are born under is what we call your “sun sign”, and this is the part of your astrological make-up that you are usually the most aware of. The sign of the zodiac that you have chosen to be born under is for a reason, 
and that reason is that it is under this sign and the energy that it represents, that you have chosen to look at yourself, your life and your lessons and how you will naturally go about learning and growing them in this incarnation. However, a lot of us will read about our sun sign and feel that it doesn’t really sum us up completely and that perhaps there is more. The reason for this is that we all have a sign called your “Ascendant” which is the planet and energy that is rising at the time of your birth, and this represents the other half of you. From the other articles that I have already written I have also made you aware of how many other influences there are in your life, but the Sun and your Ascendant are very much the backbone of who you are and how you are here to learn in this lifetime.
No two souls are the same, as there is no one way of being or doing anything that is right or wrong. We are who we are due to our own perspective and truth and that is why it is all such an illusion on the earth plane. Your Sun sign is designed to help you to grow by experiencing your life from a certain perspective with a particular view of what your truth is, and your Ascendant is there to keep it all in check, or to challenge it.
To illustrate this further I will use the example of a Cancerian Sun. This soul is born with a natural perspective that other people’s needs are more important than their own, and because of this Cancerian energy they also have the ability to feel a great depth of compassion and understanding for others. However, this soul cannot grow when it is caught up in what is best for everyone else, and not concerning itself in what is best for its own growth. So, a Cancerian is here to learn to use this Cancerian energy and depth of feeling to love themselves and give to themself as much as they can naturally give to others. What you perceive to be a strength can become a great weakness if you do not channel that energy positively.
If this Cancerian Sun was to have an Ascendant in Pisces energy, it would give them the ability to escape from reality into their own head when they need too, but that they have chosen to face much karma and learning in this lifetime. When the combination of these energies is used negatively the soul can feel too much, run away from it and then retreat to a place where they do not have to face it. However, when the soul positively blends these energies they are strong, compassionate and know their own truth and will move forward with the best interests of all concerned in their hearts, including themselves.
So, to me your Sun sign is your reality. It is what you have chosen over and above everything else to truly be, yet so many of us run away from this. We look at the negative qualities of the sign and have an excuse for our behaviour, or we discover our Ascendant and decide that that is truly who we are and want to be, and once again we run away from what we have already chosen and mapped out for ourselves.
If your Sun is in Aries, you are strong, dependable and a born leader, but you can be blinkered to the feelings and needs of others and are here to learn compassion and empathy and to see things from another point of view. If your Sun is in Taurus you are stubborn, sensitive and methodical, however you are here to learn to bend and to forgive and forget others for being who they are. With your Sun in Gemini you are mentally and physically alert, but that keeps you on the surface of life when you are here to explore the depths also. The soul with the Leo sun has such a huge heart and so much to give, but they often expect admiration and respect for all that they bring to others, and are here to learn to give without conditions.
The Virgo soul arrives on the earth plane wounded and must work through this to heal their own soul, rather than lay the blame at everyone else’s feet. If your Sun is in Libra you are here to learn balance and harmony and to be true and honest to what you truly desire and need in life. The Scorpio soul is so sensitive and very creative, but must learn not to judge everything in life by how it makes them feel as this is not a realistic way to be. With your Sun in Sagittarius you are one of the free and need to be able to spread your wings and fly, yet you can insist on controlling everyone else around you, and then lack the focus to know why. The Sun in Capricorn gives the soul ambition and focus in life, but there is no trust – this soul cannot evolve until it learns to trust in itself first and foremost. With an Aquarian Sun sign you are here to think outside the square and be different to others, yet you have so much fear of being different and of change that you stop yourself in your tracks. Finally, the Piscean soul is here for humanity and must learn to bring themselves to the earth plane totally if they are to move forward on their soul’s journey.
So, as you can see all the Sun signs are so different and then when we add the influence of your Ascendant to this mix you start to develop a personality, a path and a journey to be taken to discover how things will look from this perspective.
Honour your Sun sign, it is what you have chosen to help you to grow and it has all the beauty and wisdom you need within it. There is no right or wrong only your truth and by honouring how you have chosen to learn your truth, you can make your journey a good one. There are no mistakes and accidents, only choices and consequences. If you can understand more about who you are and what makes you tick in life, then surely you can make choices that have positive consequences rather than negative ones. Know yourself, love yourself and live your life. You chose it all for very good reasons and once you can understand those reasons, then there is only one way to go and that is up towards your higher self and all that there is.
