Brandon Bays is the bestselling author of The Journey. She also runs The Journey Weekend Intensives and is also the author of The Journey for Kids: Liberating Your Child’s Shining Potential and Freedom Is. Brandon is a compelling and innovative teacher in the mind-body-healing field.
Brandon Bays deepest prayer is that, “everyone will come to realise that inside them is a boundless love, a joy, a freedom that is beyond their wildest imaginings and that everybody is capable, no matter what their age, of getting in touch with that joy.”
Brandon’s story of being diagnosed with a tumour the size of a basketball and then remarkably healing herself within six and a half weeks, to be pronounced tumour free, without surgery or drugs is spreading all over the world. She has inspired countless others to begin their own healing journey.
“I had a fierce longing to know God, to know Truth my whole life and the ferocity of that longing was so strong that finally it gave me a wake-up call. And that wake-up call came in the form of a serious illness. It got me to finally just stop and go on my own spiritual journey. It got me to give myself permission to find out who I am.” Brandon explains.
What I have discovered is that nobody can do it for you. You must go on your own process of self-discovery.
“The illness had catapulted me, very rapidly, to Self-knowing. In that process I uncovered a means of direct access to the soul and direct access to the cell memories and the ability to clear them up so that the body and the whole being can come to a place of peace inside.”
Brandon used her experience and Self-discovery to map a path for others, yet she explains that it is in fact a pathless path. “Everybody is capable of clearing out the blocks and participating in their own healing journey and discovering their own truth and wisdom. What I have discovered is that nobody can do it for you. You must go on your own process of self-discovery.”
She continues, “Ultimately the only thing that could give me this is Truth itself. So that is what my wake up call gave me – recognition of who I am and a clearing out of who I am not. It is a path of awakening. The pathless path – that gives you the ability to open into the incident.”
This discovery did not come easily to Brandon. She had many challenging experiences along the way. “I put out a prayer that I wanted to discover the purpose of my life, to be pure joy and to help myself and others to awaken to this greatness. And you can’t argue how God answers your prayer. When my house burnt down – I had to find out that I am not my material lifestyle, I am not my house. Getting ill, I had to learn I am not my body. With my relationships leaving I had to learn that I am not my love life, I’m not my motherhood, I am not a lover.”
Brandon had to learn, “that people come and people go and lifestyles come and lifestyles go, and illnesses come and illnesses go. Yet there is a love that is here before the body is born and it is here through the whole lifestream and will be here long after this body perishes.”
Brandon’s love affair with the Truth is infectious, presenting a glimpse into a boundless world of love. “It is Eternal Love which we all truly are, that is a love worth making a marriage with. It was about that time that I decided to make my marriage with Truth. Truth had been true to me when all else had forsaken me. That is why I can do nothing else but this Journey. I am in love with this love that was revealed to me and my life is about serving that Truth and helping others to awaken to it. I can’t imagine that there is anything else I could do, but serve Truth.”
This leads us to the obvious question, ‘if we are all Truth and Love, then why do we experience suffering of illness?’ Brandon explains, “When most of us have strong emotions, not having a manual for life, we often stuff them back down, by eating them back down, drinking them away, smoking them away, or pretend it isn’t happening by reading the newspapers etc. We have all become skilled at stuffing our emotions back down and distracting ourselves from them.” She explains that if we stuff our emotion down, then at their peak, then get stored in our body.
Fortunately there is a solution to this situation. “The emotions we have are a gateway, an opening into our soul. They can also lead us back to our soul. As adults, we go on a spiritual quest because we feel there is something more to life and we feel there is something deeper, if we could just access it.”
Brandon suggests the following exercises
If you are feeling closed or are not sure what your emotions are, take a moment to sit down and inhale a few deep breaths, close your eyes – draw your awareness inside to your inner body and scan it. Notice if there is a part of the body that is tense, tight or contracted. Let your awareness go to that part of your body and bathe it in your awareness, in your own energy. Surround it in love or peace, whatever you want to call that awareness. Very simply, ask that part of the body, ‘If that tension had words I wonder what it might be saying?’ How do those words make you feel emotionally? Allow that feeling to come flooding. Don’t do anything with the emotion, just allow that emotion to be there and be present to it.
Relate to the emotion in the same way you would relate to a child that came running to you and said, ‘I am scared, I am so angry.’ Most of us would say to the child that it is natural and OK to feel that way, and just hug the child. In the same way, just hold that emotion and allow it to be felt. Even just being able to welcome the emotion is the first step towards healing.
If a strong emotion comes up, the first thing we often do is look around to find who is responsible for this emotion and then point the finger and blame someone else outside of us. Usually that blaming action causes us to attach a story to this pure raw emotion and we use it to explain the emotion away. Usually all it does is intensifies the emotion and gives us no resolution.
If emotions are coming up, divorce the story of why you believe you are feeling the emotion and feel the pure raw emotion.
Close your eyes, breathe into the body and notice where the emotion is strongest for you. Don’t try to push it away, explain it away or stuff it back down, or talk to yourself about it. Literally say ‘welcome.’ Do this not just with the one emotion, but with all the emotions, just allow them to come flooding. If you are present to the emotion and feel yourself go into the emotion, right to the core of it and just rest there, you will discover that there is a peace, right in the core of that emotion.
It is our emotions that are a doorway to our soul. If you are fully present to any emotion and open to the core of it, you will discover that at the very core of the thing you have feared the most, hated the most, and judged is a boundless blaze of freedom, of truth, or love. We have made the very thing that is the doorway to grace wrong and pushed it away. The journey is urging you, to say yes to your emotions, open into them and discover in the heart of them, the peace you are seeking.
I recommend that people sit down for a few minutes, take some long deep breaths, close their eyes and just ask, ‘Who am I?’ In the beginning you may hear words like I am a mother, a teacher, a businessman, but eventually as you keep asking ‘Who Am I? Who is the one asking this? Who is the one responding? Who am I really?’ the labels fall away.
“If I were to have a mantra for the Journey it would be ‘Stop. Breathe. And just be present.’ If you are truly present to an emotion it will come flooding, you will really experience it, and it will subside. All emotion comes from pure source and it rises up from source and can be fully felt, and then it will subside and you find yourself open in peace,” says Brandon.
On the subject of the appearance of opposites occurring within this truth, Brandon expands, “In the same moment people can experience themselves as freedom and contraction, they can feel that fear is here and love is here, they can feel that timelessness is here and a deadline is here, and yet awareness has no problem with those paradoxes. It is large enough to encompass the whole spectrum of paradoxes.”
Brandon elaborates by giving examples of enlightened masters, “If you have ever sat with enlightened masters, they are all deeply emotional people and yet there is also something else you feel in their presence. You feel that even though emotion is coming through what they are identified as something much larger. This presence is untouched by the emotion, it doesn’t judge it and say it can’t come through, it allows the whole of human life to come through itself in a very awakened way.”
The journey process is extremely successful with depression. “Depression acts as a blanket over our emotions and unfortunately medical science, psychology and alternative health keep addressing our surface blankets, and The Journey is about getting underneath the blanket and addressing the root cause of what put the surface in place.”
On the subject of children, Brandon says all parents should know that their children are born with a shiny potential. “When they are first born you can look in their eyes and see the radiance, the beauty, the presence of God there. Unfortunately, through the course of life, that natural potential can get covered over and in the Junior Journey children will get an opportunity to clear out some of the blocks that have already started.” This is a beautiful process and Brandon relates a story about an 8-year-old child who was diagnosed with dyslexia and told he would have to go to school for disabled children. His mother was devastated and begged the school for another chance. At the same time she came across the Journey book and decided to do the process at the end of the book.
“The cell memories they uncovered was when this little boy was 5-years-old he needed glasses, but his mother nor the school teacher did not know about it. He kept mixing up his ABC’s and scribbling on the page, he could not see properly. The teacher got so frustrated that she hauled him up in front of the room after the third day of this and held the page in-front of the class and said, ‘Look at him, how stupid he is, he can’t even write the letter A.’ The child did what most of us would do, he shut down after such humiliating circumstances. When he did the Journey process, not only did he face this old memory, he completed and finally forgave. The Friday after he completed the Journey process this 8-year-old boy got his first A at school. Three months later I got e-mail from his mother saying he was now the top student in his class. The reason I am telling you this story is that his story could be any of our stories,” Brandon said.
Just as Brandon began our discussion with one prayer she concluded with another, “I pray that your article reaches deeply into people. That both of you open into Grace and let Truth itself write. It is a powerful experience when you do that, people can awaken just by reading your article. It is in between your words that people get that transmission.”
