Interview with KB, founder of Lightworks Malaysia
We paid a visit to Lightworks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and did an interview with one of the co-founders, KB, to find out more about the metaphysics scene in Malaysia.
What made you and your partners found Lightworks?
Both Darreck and I are healing practitioners and teachers. We have met many wonderful and capable healers and teachers and most of them were operating proverbially from their ‘backyards’. Lightworks is our way of providing a platform and infrastructure for these healers and teachers, where a well-managed and dedicated organisation could help take their work out of the ‘closet’ to the world, and make their services more known and accessible to the public. Our intuition also told us that this would be in line with the will of the Universe and a timely idea.
Could you share with us your vision for Lightworks?
It is and will be first and foremost, a centre of light, love, healing and learning. Anything else that follows will be a reflection of this. I really haven’t a clue how these will take form in the future. I could not have anticipated most of the things that have happened or come to Lightworks for the last year and frankly I have relinquished the need to know or to be in control of these things. Lightworks has somehow taken on a life of its own, guided by the mysterious and unseen hands of the Universe, as it were, and increasingly I see myself as a curious observer, a benevolent by-stander. Maybe life should remain a bit of a mystery: the Mystery of Life!
Could you briefly describe the services Lightworks offer?
Light, love, healing and learning!!! Anything else is non-essential. How do we do this? Whatever it takes: workshops, private healing, consultation sessions, books, CDs, oils, tools, crystals or whatever that resonates with us!
A lot of time, people just come in and sit in the energy of our space, and they tell us they are experiencing a subtle healing. Others might just have a quick chat with us or quick browse of our books, and they ‘co-incidentally’ find the higher advice they were looking for. We like to think that everybody leaves with a gift!
We have an informal policy for our retail: we only carry products which we feel will confer a real and positive benefit to people. Our book section is more like a public library. We actually encourage people to sit down and read: it may be just that one sentence that you need to find from that particular book, and you don’t necessarily have to buy that book either.
Has it been particularly challenging for a metaphysics/new age centre such as Lightworks to be operating in a predominantly muslim country like Malaysia?
No. Malaysia may be predominantly muslim in population numbers, but in its essence Malaysia is a fantastic melting pot of many cultures. We have 3 major races living in relative harmony, having unity whilst preserving the uniqueness and individuality of all cultures. I sense Malaysia as playing a very unique and important karmic role in this respect, as a role model of unity in diversity, a quality which is much needed in the world today and in the years to come.
What is the general profile of your customers, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and occupation?
It is probably not appropriate to pigeonhole profiles of customers along these criteria. Let’s just say this: the people who come are those we can serve in some way, and we have found that the people that we can and are able to serve transcends all boundaries of age, gender, ethnicity and occupation. That is the great beauty of this work: Love is Universal!
What were some of the obstacles you faced in setting up Lightworks?
My own ‘perceived’ lacks and limitations, and nothing else! And I say ‘perceived’ because I have learnt that all lack and limitation is an illusion. It is not Real. It does not speak of who You really are.
Saying that, Lightworks presented me with many spiritual challenges and areas of growth. It was wonderful to see how it (Lightworks) interacted with my lessons, which it continues to do. They say Life presents you with only two things: gifts and lessons, and ultimately, both are the same.
You have mentioned Penang to be a spiritual hub of Malaysia. Could you share more about this?
These are just my observations and my sense of the energy of that island and the wonderful people of Penang. There is a clarity in the energy in Penang that I seldom find elsewhere in Malaysia. It’s almost as if people there are less encased in the world of form. I also find that the spiritual seekers in Penang have a greater sense of dedication, especially when it comes to doing the all-important ‘sweat and tears’ inner work.
Where do you feel is Malaysia heading towards in terms of spiritual and metaphysical development? Do you see an increasing acceptance of new age teachings, practices and healing modalities?
There will be an increased acceptance, but this will be a worldwide phenomena. On a more particular note, unity in diversity is going to be a keynote for this new millennium, and I foresee Malaysia playing a very important role in this.
