Metatonic: Ali Kesanto's Music Journey

I have always been very drawn to the mystical side of life and felt the need to dig deeper into different feelings and experiences. When I first started to play the piano as a kid, I used to get very frustrated about learning all the musical theory and just playing the compositions of other people. It’s not that the songs weren’t great musical pieces, they just completely seemed to lack my own perspective of the world which made them sort of one dimensional to me. I felt the beauty of the music, but only on the surface. After a very disciplined few years of playing the piano, I finally got frustrated and dropped it completely, feeling that this was not what I wanted and what I was meant to do. I desired to create, not to copy.

In my early twenties, I discovered music that resonated with me in a new and exciting way. Artists like Björk, Tricky, Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead ignited the musical spark in me once again, as I realised that these people were expressing their soul sceneries freely without any theoretical constraints. I then started to think and dream about music creation very enthusiastically and soon a friend of mine in my workplace offered to lend me his 2 synthesizers for his 2 month holiday. There was no turning back after this; the universe had kindly responded to my thoughts and provided me the tools to create what I in my heart desired and felt that I needed to do. It was a grand lesson on the power of though, which I learned more about later on.

By recording the music that surfaced when discovering the non-physical and connecting with my higher self, I would create something that would hopefully inspire and empower people in the same quest.

It has never been easy for me to mimic any set guidelines, so my music composition was clearly not structured in any ways. I used more of a free flow approach, where I got into the zone and let the song come out of me. At the same time when I was learning to use the modern music making gear, the industry started to change drastically, with all the new possibilities of samplers and software synthesizers coming in. This blew up the creative potential as it supported my chaos-like creative style; with increasing computer power I was able to concentrate on letting stuff come out of me rather than thinking linearly which part to record next.

I was very happy with the music I was creating but in my life I still constantly felt the need to dig deeper into the human consciousness. I was being pulled to somewhere, but I needed a bit of guidance. I had just started to meditate on a daily basis and as I set out the thought to expand my consciousness, I started to get a feeling to go to the library. I followed my intuition and when I got between the vast bookshelves certain books started to draw me to them. My reading road trip took the following route, Paulo Coelho -> Julia Cameron -> Sonia Choquette -> Wayne W. Dyer ->Jose Silva -> Carlos Castaneda -> Robert Monroe. At the same time I was also introduced to quantum and theoretical physics, and I read everything I had my hands on about those subjects. In retrospect, this later provided me the means to connect my metaphysical experiences to the theories about the physical world, although at the time I was just reading what my intuitive compass was pointing to.

I finally ended up reading Robert Monroe’s out of body experiences which blew me out of the orbit completely. The stories were different from anything I had ever read, but still seemed strangely familiar. I immediately started studying the techniques that were used to learn wake induced OBEs and after a few weeks of energy body training and chakra cleansing, I had my first OBE. At my bed, I found myself in a strange position within my physical body, made a somersault inside myself and ended up beside my bed, wondering what had just happened. I quickly gazed the room, tried to imprint the memory so I wouldn’t lose it while coming back to physical and dove back into my body.
