In metaphysics, ego is not referring to "an inflated feeling of pride in your superiority to others". It is usually referring to your sense of an individual self. The ego is a voice of those levels of consciousness that still hold on to the illusion of a separate self. The ego is a necessary part of our existence on Earth as it determines our unique personality. A main concern of ego is with the individual's safety and survival. Without it, we would not be able to function on the physical realm.
However, many teachers have taught that the ego, also commonly referred to as the lower self, can be a stumbling block if we over-identify ourselves with it. To quote Aaron (channeled by Barbara Brodsky):
The ego creates stories that solidify a person’s sense of being a discrete individual, separate from the rest of creation. These stories may be pleasant, even useful stories, but they inflate the sense of a separate self. Ego speaks from a fear-based aspect of self that wants to be safe, to know that personal needs are met, to feel in control. These are common desires for the sentient being, and they are not bad. To aspire to be safe and that all beings be safe is a statement of kindness and clarity. Such aspiration does not depend on ego. But to obsess about safety and create stories — fantasies really — deepens fear.
It is thus about balancing the ego, to be the unique and personal expression of who we are in the divine.
