15 October: Blog Action Day - Poverty
TAGS:

This year's Blog Action Day (http://blogactionday.org/) aims to alter the global conversation on October 15th, uniting thousands of change making bloggers in a world-wide discussion of one crucial issue: poverty. With over 4,000 blogs already participating, including some of the most popular sites in the world, the organizers expect to bring the discussion on poverty to an audience of over nine-million internet users.

Each participant is asked to dedicate one day from their blogging schedule to writing about poverty. Bloggers are also asked to cover the issue from the perspective of their blog's topic or approach. A blog about business might write about how business can utilize ethical practices and still boost their bottom line. A technology blog might write about the ways technological innovations can help to lift people out of poverty. A political blog might raise a magnifying glass over the poverty-related policies of political candidates.

By encouraging each blogger to view the issue of poverty through their own unique lens, Blog Action Day aims to demonstrate that poverty is an issue that touches every part of human experience.

The initiative will also be raising funds for Kiva.org, a non-profit organization that provides low-interest loans to entrepreneurs in the developing world.

Blog Action Day 2008 follows on from the incredible success of the 2007 event, with over 20,000 bloggers exploring issues of the environment on October 15th last year. This global discussion resulted in actions, advice, ideas, plans, and empowerment. The initiative was endorsed by the United Nations Environmental Programme and the European Union, and received coverage from numerous mainstream media outlets.
