Horses are creatures who worship the earth
As they gallop on feet of ivory
Constrained by the wonder of dying and birth
The horses still run, they are free

My body is merely the shell of my soul
But the flesh must be given its due
Like a pony that carries its rider back home
Like an old friend thats tried and been true

I had a vision of eagles and horses
High on a ridge in a race with the wind
Going higher and higher and faster and faster
On eagles and horses Im flying again

Eagles inhabit the heavenly heights
They know neither limit nor bound
Theyre the guardian angels of darkness and light
They see all and hear every sound

A cat, I am sure, could walk on a cloud without coming through
- Jules Verne

From the dawn of our known beginnings the cat had been revered for its agility, grace, independent spirit, fierce hunting skills and heightened awareness. We have revered the cat for its feminine sensuality, uncontained elegance and the sense of self love and appreciation that it shows us. There is also the familiar rumbling purr of a contented cat, or is it more than mere contentedness that stimulates a cat to purr? What if purring serves a valuable sonic purpose and the beautiful cat is actually much more than a sensitive companion? What if the cat is actually an ancient sound healer strategically placed in our very midsts?

Chief Joseph once told me the major lesson our pets have to teach us is to live in the moment and to love unconditionally.

Chief Joseph

Your domestic pets, especially dogs and cats, are one of the greatest gifts humanity has ever received. We realize you sometimes take these delightful creatures for granted—just as you sometimes do your fellow humans.

Pets are not in your lives solely for your entertainment, though they certainly do entertain you.

More importantly, pets are here as your teachers and, often, your healers.

You have a phrase bandied about much—“dumb” animals. By “dumb” you generally mean “stupid.” Or at least something less than human intelligence.

August 21, 2007

Thursday evening last week, the 16th of August, 2007, I lost the fur love of my life, my Maine Coon cat Mr. Bear. He had gone in to the vet’s to get an abscessed tooth pulled and when the blood work came back before doing the surgery it was discovered that he was in kidney distress and failure. Rather than keep him on antibiotics for the month or so that he would have left to live, I made the decision to let him go instead. He was about 15-16 years in age and had been in diminishing health for the last 6 months or so.

Many times on my Spiritual journey I have been amazed at the power of the collective consciousness to create, heal and change. Never was it more poignant and dramatic than on Sunday, October 20, l996. I remember the date so clearly because it happened to be my 49th birthday.

It was a picture perfect fall day in Iowa with crystal clear blue skies, gorgeous trees in their full fall attire and perfect temperatures in the 60’s. My friend Tiya and I decided to have a nice long horse ride before we headed off to the business of our day. I met Tiya at her beautiful farm with magnificent views, large oaks and rolling hills all around. I remember there was magic in the air as it was a special day for me. It was also a perfect day to enjoy our favorite pass time which was riding our horses across the land waves of Iowa feeling our connection with each other, our equine companions and Mother Earth.
